Portugal and Spain both offer dedicated digital nomad visas, making them the two most popular European destinations for remote workers. But they differ in costs, tax treatment, and lifestyle. Here’s how they compare.
Visa Requirements
Portugal’s D8 Digital Nomad Visa requires proof of remote income of at least 4x the Portuguese minimum wage (approximately €3,400/month in 2026). You must work for a non-Portuguese employer or be self-employed.
Spain’s Digital Nomad Visa requires a minimum income of €2,520/month (200% of Spanish minimum wage) and at least 3 months of employment history with your current employer.
Tax Treatment
Portugal offers the Non-Habitual Resident (NHR) tax regime with a flat 20% tax rate on Portuguese-sourced employment income. Foreign income may be exempt from Portuguese tax in many cases.
Spain offers the Beckham Law (special tax regime) with a flat 24% tax on Spanish-sourced income up to €600,000. Foreign-sourced income is generally not taxed under this regime.
Cost of Living
Portugal is generally 15-25% cheaper than Spain, especially in housing. Lisbon averages €800-1,200/month for a one-bedroom apartment, while Barcelona or Madrid averages €1,000-1,500. Food, transportation, and entertainment are comparable.
Lifestyle & Community
Portugal (especially Lisbon) has one of Europe’s most established digital nomad communities, with numerous co-working spaces, meetups, and networking events. Spain offers more geographic diversity, from Barcelona’s beaches to Madrid’s urban energy to smaller cities like Valencia and Malaga.
Path to Residency
Both countries offer permanent residency after 5 years and citizenship possibilities. Portugal grants citizenship after 5 years; Spain requires 10 years (2 years for Latin American nationals).
