The Kennismigrant (Highly Skilled Migrant) visa is the Netherlands’ most popular work permit for international professionals. It’s a fast-tracked, employer-sponsored residence permit designed to attract talent in sectors like technology, engineering, finance, and research. The standout feature is speed — processing takes just 2-4 weeks, making it one of the fastest work visa processes in Europe. If your employer is a recognized sponsor with the IND (Dutch Immigration Service), the entire process is remarkably smooth.

Overview
The Kennismigrant program has been a cornerstone of Dutch immigration policy since 2004. It allows Dutch companies to hire non-EU professionals quickly, provided the employee meets a minimum salary threshold. The employer must be registered as a “recognized sponsor” (erkend referent) with the IND — a one-time registration that most international companies and tech firms already have.
Eligibility Requirements
- Minimum salary (2024/2025):
- Age 30+: €5,331/month gross (approximately €64,000/year)
- Under 30: €3,909/month gross (approximately €47,000/year)
- Reduced threshold after completing a Dutch higher education program
- Employer must be a recognized sponsor with the IND. Most multinational companies, tech firms, universities, and research institutions already hold this status.
- Valid employment contract for the duration of the visa (typically 1-5 years).
- No education requirement. Unlike many other countries, the Netherlands doesn’t require a specific degree for the Kennismigrant — your salary is the primary qualification.
- No Dutch language requirement.
- Valid passport and clean criminal record.
Application Process
- Employer applies on your behalf. The recognized sponsor submits the application to the IND — you don’t need to apply yourself.
- IND processes the application: Typically 2-4 weeks for recognized sponsors.
- MVV (entry visa) issuance: If required (for non-visa-exempt nationalities), the MVV is issued at the Dutch embassy in your country.
- Travel to the Netherlands.
- Collect your residence permit: Visit the IND desk to provide biometrics and collect your physical residence permit card.
- Register at the municipality (gemeente): Required within 5 days of arrival.
Costs and Fees
- Application fee: €210 (paid by applicant or employer)
- MVV fee (if applicable): Included in the application fee
- Employer’s recognized sponsor registration: €4,524 (one-time, already done by most international companies)
- Health insurance: Mandatory Dutch basic insurance (basisverzekering) approximately €120-€170/month
Total personal cost: approximately €210-€500 — making it one of the cheapest work visa processes globally.
Timeline
- Application processing: 2-4 weeks
- MVV collection (if needed): 1-2 weeks
- Total from job offer to working in NL: 4-8 weeks
Key Benefits
- 30% ruling: Highly skilled migrants may qualify for the 30% ruling, a tax benefit where 30% of your gross salary is tax-free for up to 5 years. This is a massive financial advantage — on a €70,000 salary, you’d save roughly €7,000-€10,000/year in taxes.
- No Dutch language requirement. English is widely spoken in Dutch workplaces, especially in tech and international companies.
- Bring your family: Partner and children can join you immediately with full work rights for your partner.
- Path to permanent residence: After 5 years, apply for an EU long-term resident permit. After living in the Netherlands for 5 years, you can also apply for Dutch citizenship (requires civic integration exam).
- EU travel: Your residence permit allows visa-free travel throughout the Schengen area.
The 30% Ruling Explained
If you’re recruited from abroad (lived 150+ km from the Dutch border for at least 16 of the 24 months before your employment start), you may qualify for the 30% ruling. Your employer designates 30% of your salary as a tax-free “extraterritorial allowance.” The remaining 70% is taxed at normal Dutch rates. This effectively reduces your tax rate significantly. The ruling is granted for a maximum of 5 years and is applied for by your employer.
Tips
- Confirm your employer is a recognized sponsor. The IND publishes a list online. If they’re not registered, the process takes much longer.
- Apply for the 30% ruling immediately. Your employer should submit the request within 4 months of your start date. Missing this deadline means losing years of tax benefits.
- Register at the municipality quickly. You need a BSN (citizen service number) to open a bank account, get health insurance, and start your daily life. Register within 5 days of arrival.
- The under-30 salary threshold is key. If you’re 29 and earning €40,000+, that’s sufficient. The threshold jumps significantly at age 30.
- Partner work rights are automatic. Your partner receives a residence permit with open work authorization — they can work for any employer without a separate work permit.
