The UAE Employment Visa (also called a Work Residence Visa) is the standard pathway for professionals hired by a UAE-based employer. It’s a sponsor-based visa — your employer applies for and holds the visa on your behalf, giving you the legal right to live and work in the UAE for 2-3 years. With no income tax, world-class infrastructure, and access to a global business hub, the UAE Employment Visa is one of the most popular work visas in the world, with millions of expatriates holding one at any given time.

Overview
The UAE Employment Visa process is employer-driven. Your company handles most of the paperwork, including obtaining a work permit from the Ministry of Human Resources (MOHRE), an entry permit, and then the residence visa stamping. The process typically takes 2-5 weeks from job offer to visa in hand. The visa is tied to your employer — if you change jobs, you need to cancel the old visa and obtain a new one (though recent reforms have made this easier).
Eligibility Requirements
- Job offer from a UAE-registered company: The company must have a valid trade license and be registered with MOHRE.
- Educational qualifications: For professional roles, your degree must be attested by the UAE embassy in your home country and then by the UAE Ministry of Foreign Affairs. The degree attestation chain varies by country but typically involves: university verification → foreign affairs ministry → UAE embassy → UAE MOFA.
- Medical fitness: You must pass a medical test in the UAE (blood test for communicable diseases, chest X-ray).
- No age limit (though practical hiring preferences apply).
- No minimum salary for the visa itself, though salaries must meet MOHRE guidelines for the occupation category.
Application Process
- Employer applies for a Work Permit through MOHRE (or the relevant free zone authority if the company is in a free zone).
- Entry Permit issued: Once the work permit is approved, an entry permit (pink visa) is issued, allowing you to enter the UAE. Valid for 60 days.
- Enter the UAE and complete medical fitness test.
- Emirates ID registration: Visit an ICA center for biometric capture.
- Residence visa stamping: Your passport is stamped with the residence visa.
- Labour card issued: Your official work permit card, confirming your employment details.
Costs and Fees
By law, the employer pays all visa-related costs (though in practice, some employers may include visa costs in their employment terms):
- Work permit: AED 300-$5,000 depending on company category and skill level
- Entry permit: AED 350-$500
- Medical fitness test: AED 300-$500
- Emirates ID: AED 370 (for 2-3 years)
- Residence visa stamping: AED 500-$700
- Degree attestation: Varies ($200-$1,000 depending on country)
- Health insurance: Required — typically provided by employer
Free Zone vs. Mainland Employment
- Mainland companies: Process through MOHRE. Employees can work anywhere in the UAE.
- Free zone companies: Process through the specific free zone authority (e.g., DMCC, DIFC, JAFZA). Employees are technically limited to working within the free zone, though this is loosely enforced for service roles.
- Visa process is similar but free zone visas tend to be slightly faster.
Timeline
- Work permit approval: 3-7 business days
- Entry permit: 2-5 business days after work permit
- Medical + Emirates ID + visa stamping: 1-2 weeks after arrival
- Total from job offer to visa: 2-5 weeks
Key Benefits
- No income tax: Your salary is fully yours
- Sponsor dependents: Spouse and children (requires minimum salary, typically AED 4,000+ for shared accommodation or AED 3,000+ for separate accommodation)
- End-of-service gratuity: UAE law mandates employers pay a gratuity of 21 days’ salary per year (first 5 years) and 30 days per year (after 5 years) upon termination
- Pathway to Golden Visa: Once established, you may qualify for a Golden Visa (self-sponsored, 5-10 years)
Recent Reforms
- Green Visa (2022): A new self-sponsored 5-year visa for skilled employees earning AED 15,000+/month. Provides more independence from your employer.
- Job Exploration Visa: Allows entry to the UAE for 60-120 days to search for employment.
- Grace period extended: If you lose your job, you now have 180 days (up from 30) to find new employment before your visa is cancelled.
- No-objection certificate (NOC) reformed: You can change employers without needing your current employer’s NOC in many cases.
Tips
- Negotiate your package wisely. UAE salaries are tax-free but typically include housing allowance, transport allowance, and annual flights home. These are often as important as the base salary.
- Get your degree attested before arrival. The attestation chain takes 2-6 weeks and can’t be done from inside the UAE.
- Understand the probation period. UAE law allows a 6-month probation period. During this time, either party can terminate with 14 days’ notice.
- Consider upgrading to a Golden Visa. If you earn AED 30,000+/month and have a bachelor’s degree, you may qualify — giving you independence from employer sponsorship.
