Eligibility Requirements
- Nomination: You need either a state/territory government nomination OR sponsorship from an eligible family member living in regional Australia.
- Occupation: Must be on the relevant skilled occupation list (MLTSSL, STSOL, or ROL depending on the nomination type).
- Skills assessment: Positive assessment from the relevant authority.
- Points score: Minimum 65 points (including the 15-point bonus). Effective minimum without the bonus: 50 points — significantly lower than 189 or 190.

As of the current definition, regional Australia is everywhere except the three major metropolitan areas:

- Plan for the income threshold. AUD $53,900/year is the key benchmark for 191 eligibility. Ensure your career path in regional Australia will meet this threshold within 3 years.
- 491 is not a dead end. While living regionally, you can also apply for employer-sponsored visas (482/186) or even the 189/190 if your points increase — giving you multiple paths to PR.
- Family sponsorship option. If you have an eligible relative (parent, sibling, child, aunt, uncle, nephew, niece, or grandparent) living in regional Australia, they can sponsor you without state nomination.
