UK Family Visa (Spouse/Partner): Complete Guide for 2026

The UK Family visa allows you to join a family member who is either a British citizen or has settled status (Indefinite Leave to Remain) in the United Kingdom. It covers spouses, partners, parents of British children, and adult dependent relatives. For many people, it’s the most natural route to living permanently in the UK — your relationship is your qualification. The visa initially grants 2.5 years of leave, is extendable, and leads to settlement after 5 years (or 10 years on a different income route).

Overview

The UK Family visa primarily covers these relationships:

  • Spouse or civil partner: You’re legally married to or in a civil partnership with a British citizen or settled person.
  • Unmarried partner: You’ve been living together in a relationship akin to marriage for at least 2 years.
  • Fiancé(e) or proposed civil partner: You intend to marry or enter a civil partnership within 6 months of arriving in the UK.
  • Parent of a British child: You have a child who is a British citizen or settled in the UK, and you have access rights or shared responsibility.
  • Adult dependent relative: Very restrictive — only for elderly parents or grandparents who require long-term care that isn’t available in their home country.

Eligibility Requirements

Relationship requirement:

  • Your relationship must be genuine and subsisting. The Home Office will scrutinize your evidence for any indicators of a sham marriage or convenience relationship.
  • For unmarried partners: you must prove 2 years of cohabitation with joint bills, tenancy agreements, bank statements, or other evidence showing a shared life.
  • Both partners must be 18 or older.

Financial requirement (minimum income):

  • Your UK-based sponsor must earn at least £29,000 per year (as of the 2024 threshold increase; was previously £18,600). This can come from employment, self-employment, pension, or other income.
  • Alternatively, savings of £62,500+ above the threshold can be used (calculated as: required amount × 2.5 years = savings needed).
  • The applicant’s own income can be counted if they are already working legally in the UK.

English language requirement:

  • Must prove English at CEFR Level A1 (basic) for the initial application.
  • Must prove CEFR Level A2 for the first extension.
  • Must prove CEFR Level B1 for settlement (ILR).

Accommodation: Must have adequate housing in the UK that isn’t overcrowded and that you own or occupy exclusively.

Application Process

  1. Gather evidence. Compile proof of your relationship (photos together, communication records, travel together, shared finances), your sponsor’s income evidence (payslips, P60, bank statements, employer letter), English test results, and accommodation proof.
  2. Apply online through the UK Visas and Immigration website. Complete the application form thoroughly — incomplete answers lead to delays.
  3. Pay fees and IHS. The Immigration Health Surcharge must be paid upfront for the full visa duration.
  4. Attend a biometrics appointment at a Visa Application Centre.
  5. Wait for a decision. Standard processing: 12-24 weeks (from outside the UK). Priority services available in some locations.
  6. Receive your visa and travel to the UK within the validity window (usually 30 days from the specified start date).

Costs and Fees

  • Application fee: £1,846 (applying from outside the UK) or £1,048 (applying from inside the UK)
  • Immigration Health Surcharge: £1,035/year × 2.5 years = £2,587.50
  • English language test: £150-£200
  • TB test (if applicable): £50-£100
  • Document translation/notarization: £100-£500
  • Priority processing (optional, where available): £500-£1,000

Total upfront cost: approximately £4,500-£5,500 for the initial 2.5-year visa from outside the UK. You’ll need to pay similar fees again for the 2.5-year extension, and then again for the ILR application.

Timeline

  • Document preparation: 2-6 weeks
  • Processing (from outside UK): 12-24 weeks standard; 6 weeks with priority
  • Processing (from inside UK): 8-16 weeks standard
  • Initial visa grant: 2 years 9 months
  • First extension: After 2.5 years, extend for another 2.5 years
  • Settlement (ILR): After 5 years total
  • British citizenship: 1 year after ILR (if desired)

Building a Strong Application

  • Over-document your relationship. Include photos spanning the entire relationship, screenshots of regular communication (calls, messages), records of visits, evidence of meeting each other’s families, and any joint commitments.
  • Financial evidence must be rock-solid. Provide 6 months of consecutive bank statements, payslips matching the statements, an employer letter confirming salary and position, and the most recent P60 or tax return.
  • Write a cover letter. A clear, chronological narrative of your relationship helps the caseworker understand your story. Include key dates: when you met, when you started your relationship, visits, proposals, marriage.
  • Address any gaps or complications upfront. If there are age gaps, short relationship duration, limited visits, or previous immigration issues, address them proactively with supporting evidence.

Common Mistakes

  • Insufficient income evidence: The financial requirement is strictly enforced. If your sponsor earns exactly £29,000, one missed payslip can mean refusal.
  • Weak relationship evidence: Submitting only wedding photos isn’t enough. You need diverse evidence showing a genuine, ongoing relationship.
  • Missing the English test requirement: Even if you speak fluent English, you need a formal test from an approved provider (unless exempt by nationality).
  • Applying on the wrong form: Fiancé(e) visas, spouse visas, and unmarried partner visas have different requirements. Make sure you apply under the correct category.
