UK Scale-up Visa: Complete Guide for 2026

The UK Scale-up visa is a relatively new immigration route launched in August 2022, designed specifically for experienced professionals recruited by the UK’s fastest-growing businesses. What makes it unique is the freedom it offers after just six months — unlike the Skilled Worker visa, you’re not tied to your sponsoring employer for the full visa duration. After the initial six-month period, you can work for any employer, switch jobs freely, or even become self-employed.

Overview

The Scale-up visa was created to help high-growth UK companies compete globally for talent. It targets mid-to-senior professionals — not entry-level workers — and requires the sponsoring company to meet specific growth criteria. The visa is initially granted for 2 years, with the possibility of extending for 3 more years, and it leads to settlement (Indefinite Leave to Remain) after 5 years.

After your first 6 months working for the sponsoring employer, you gain full flexibility in the UK labor market. This “unsponsored” period is a major draw for professionals who want the security of permanent residence without being locked to one company.

Eligibility Requirements

For the applicant:

  • Job offer from a Scale-up sponsor: The role must be with a UK company that has been approved as a Scale-up sponsor by the Home Office.
  • Skill level: The job must be at RQF Level 6 or above (graduate level). This covers roles like software engineers, project managers, analysts, consultants, and most professional occupations.
  • Minimum salary: At least £36,300 per year (or the going rate for the occupation, whichever is higher).
  • English language: Must prove English proficiency at CEFR Level B1 (intermediate) through an approved test, a degree taught in English, or nationality of a majority English-speaking country.
  • Maintenance funds: Must have at least £1,270 in your bank account for 28 consecutive days (unless your sponsor certifies maintenance).

For the sponsoring company:

  • Must demonstrate at least 20% annual growth in either turnover or employee headcount over a 3-year period
  • Must have had a minimum of 10 employees at the start of the 3-year growth period
  • Must be approved as a Scale-up sponsor by the Home Office

Application Process

  1. Receive a Certificate of Sponsorship (CoS) from your Scale-up sponsor employer. This is an electronic document with your job details and salary.
  2. Apply online through the UK Visas and Immigration website. Complete the application form and upload supporting documents.
  3. Provide biometrics at a visa application center (fingerprints and photograph).
  4. Wait for a decision. Standard processing takes 3-8 weeks. Priority and super-priority services are available for faster processing.
  5. Receive your visa and travel to the UK.
  6. After 6 months: You gain permission to work for any employer, change jobs, or become self-employed without needing a new visa or sponsor.

  • Application fee: £822
  • Immigration Health Surcharge (IHS): £1,035 per year (£2,070 for 2 years)

  • English language test: £150-£200
  • Tuberculosis test (if applicable): £50-£100

Total upfront cost: approximately £3,000-£4,000 for the initial 2-year visa.

Timeline

  • Application preparation: 1-2 weeks
  • Processing time: 3-8 weeks (standard), 5 business days (priority), or next business day (super priority)
  • Tied employment period: First 6 months with sponsor
  • Free to change employers: After 6 months
  • Extension: After 2 years, extend for 3 more years
  • Settlement (ILR): After 5 continuous years

Scale-up vs. Skilled Worker Visa

  • Employer flexibility: Scale-up offers free movement after 6 months. Skilled Worker keeps you tied to your sponsor (changing employers requires a new visa application).
  • Salary threshold: Scale-up requires £36,300 minimum. Skilled Worker has a general threshold of £38,700 (with some exceptions).
  • Sponsor requirements: Scale-up sponsors must prove high growth. Any licensed employer can sponsor a Skilled Worker.
  • Availability: Fewer companies qualify as Scale-up sponsors, so job options are more limited.

Tips and Strategies

  • Research Scale-up sponsors. The Home Office publishes a register of licensed Scale-up sponsors. Target your job search specifically at these companies.
  • Negotiate salary above the threshold. The £36,300 minimum is a floor. Higher salary strengthens your future extension and settlement applications.
  • Plan your post-6-month career. The free movement period is your biggest advantage. Use the first 6 months to network and explore opportunities you’ll pursue once unrestricted.
  • Keep records of employment. For your extension and eventual ILR application, you’ll need to prove continuous qualifying employment or self-employment throughout the visa period.
